On This Program you will...

Explore this French overseas territory that sits pristinely in the Caribbean and is home to diverse communities of European, Asian, African and indigenous descent; explore Creole history and learn about the Caribbean’s role in the slave trade. The atmosphere is heartfelt and colorful, with a French passion for cuisine and a Caribbean reverence for the surrounding natural environment. You’ll become a more confident French speaker – the official language here – through language courses and interaction with locals.

The GLA Experiential Language Curriculum™ integrates French language learning into all aspects of the experience, allowing students to take away more of the culture, and also leave more behind. From community service to excursions and cultural events, language is given a new context. French class will never be the same.

Program Type:

Language Immersion

Your Adventure is Just Around the Corner!

Community Service

Put your French skills to the test as you work with and support the local community through meaningful service. You’ll work in conjunction with community leaders to make city beautification projects a reality – building benches, installing recycling bins, carrying out beach clean-ups and sprucing up are much-needed in the city’s many outdoor spaces. Build cross-cultural relationships with local children and teens at a nearby camp where you’ll facilitate language exchange games and activities. Through this work you’ll be sure to improve your French and get to know your new home.

Immersive Learning

Improve your French skills through structured practice and local immersion. Dynamic instructors will lead you in lessons designed to develop independence and confidence. You’ll also get to practice speaking and comprehension while interacting with friendly locals. Experience a mix of French culture with a Creole twist and learn about Guadeloupe’s spin on culture and food. Participate in a traditional music workshop, experiencing the Afro-Caribbean beats that give Guadeloupe its special character.

Adventure

Guadeloupe is dotted with old plantations and colonial homes, while local markets burst with color and activity. Hike through the rainforest to a breathtaking waterfall and you’ll be rewarded for your hard work with an opportunity to swim in the natural river pools near the falls. Snorkel in the crystal clear waters off the island’s coast for a front-row seat in the observation of fish and other ocean life. And don’t forget that you’ll be furthering your French immersion each day of your adventure throughout Guadeloupe, as you interact with local speakers in this close-knit Caribbean community.

Lodging

Home Base is a cozy wooden guesthouse with a pool, surrounded by lush palms. Students will share rooms with roommates and have access to Western-style bathrooms. Meals will be served in a common area and typically consist of meats, rice, vegetables and fruit prepared Creole style.
