ISLAND HEALTH EXPEDITION

Program Overview

On this program you will experience a side of Bali few travelers to the island ever get to see. Study public health through two different perspectives: Western convention and the indigenous wisdom of the East. Deepen your understanding of the global health puzzle with a visit to a natural birth clinic, and uncover how cultural competence is just as important for achieving wellness as medical resources and technology. This Public Health & Medicine program combines meaningful community service with immersive learning and adventure to curate an ideal itinerary for your stay on the island. During your time not spent on community service, enjoy Bali’s uplifting culture through live music, dance performances and memorable meals. This is a high adventure program on the Balinese coast, and a journey you will never forget.

Community Service

Spend time assisting medical students, NGOs and community leaders in a local village. We’ll assist a local medical university that provides free health services to Balinese people who cannot afford treatment or live in remote areas where healthcare is limited. You’ll go into a rural village with local medical students, observe the team as they provide free health checks and basic treatments. Take your experience full circle as you help design and deliver a health education workshop for local youth in the second half of the program. For students on the 21-Day Flagship Program, take an excursion to the coast for a presentation on the Coral Reef Restoration Project, at the Coral Triangle Centre, a local environmental health initiative.

Immersive Learning

Bali is a cultural treasure as unique as the welcoming communities and architectural wonders you’ll discover on the island. You will be immersed in diverse healthcare settings, such as health workshops with children, and exploring the intersection of where traditional medicine meets western practices. To better understand the local philosophy on holistic wellness, you’ll also visit a natural birth clinic and explore where natural remedies are grown on an herbal walk. Beyond the theme of Public Health & Medicine, there’s no better way to learn about traditional Balinese culture than with full sensory immersion: temple visits, a rice paddy walk, live gamelan music, legong dance performances and dinner at the Royal Palace. For students on both programs, learn all the ins and outs of a traditional jungle healer’s practice.

Adventure

With its pounding surf, emerald rice terraces and artistic culture, Bali is adventure, culture and spirituality all in one. Visit Amed, a sleepy fishing village off the beaten path that’s just waiting to be discovered. You’ll go on a spectacular sunrise boat ride just off the island’s coast and snorkel over coral reefs, marine wildlife, and even the remnants of a Japanese shipwreck from World War II. You’ll also have a one-of-a-kind experience learning to scuba dive in the crystal clear waters of the island. Near Home Base, adventure is also never far away — you’ll even have a chance to surf among friendly locals on world-class waves! For students on the 21-Day Flagship Program, you’ll get to explore Bali’s lush jungle habitats on a whiteriver rafting adventure.

Lodging

Your Home Base in Bali on the 21-Day Flagship Program will be in one main location – Ubud – alongside two excursions to Amed and Sanur. On the 14-Day Program, your primary lodging will be in Ubud and you will also enjoy an excursion to Amed. Ubud, Bali’s cultural hub, is a standout with all the comforts of home alongside an artful and serene essence that draws people from all over the world to the island. Your housing will be diverse, from an authentic family home to a beach bungalow. Students share comfortable, gender-segregated rooms with roommates, and have access to bathrooms with Western-style toilets and showers.
