SERVICE EXPEDITION IN THE ANDES
Program Overview
On this program you will experience Peru through all five senses. Bike, raft, trek, eat and dance your way through your expedition. Explore the key archaeological sites of the Sacred Valley. Then, head to the Amazon cloud forest for some high adventure! When not on the road, you will contribute to a meaningful volunteer project: volunteer at a female student dormitory in the community to improve access to education for indigenous girls from rural areas. The more time you stay, you’ll see that Peru is more than its wild landscapes and ancient arts. The generosity and lively culture of its people are what have truly endured the last several centuries, and you will never forget the people you meet along the way.

Community Service
Community-led service is at the heart of every GLA program, and your efforts here in Peru will contribute to reducing a persistent education gap. Help Peruvian girls from rural communities gain access to quality education by building new infrastructure for school dormitories in the Sacred Valley. These dormitories serve as a “home away from home” for rural girls who are coming to the Sacred Valley to attend high school. Without these dormitories, girls in the community face unjust odds in completing their education in safety and comfort. Contribute to the wellbeing of Peruvian rural communities as you see up-close how projects like these can deliver meaningful – and sustainable – change.
Immersive Learning
Cultural immersion and hands-on experiences are what really make a place come alive. During your time in Peru, learn firsthand about the country’s rich cultural heritage that descends from the Incan empire. Visit a local weaving cooperative, where beautiful Andean textiles are produced. The colors, patterns and complexity will leave you in awe! Find out how to make chocolate the Peruvian way during an interactive workshop and then spend the afternoon among local artisans at a bustling market in Cusco. You will then have a unique and memorable experience as you meet a local healer and take part in a traditional Andean ceremony that will give you insight into the culture and customs that have endured centuries. Try your feet at dances from different regions of Peru and enjoy the music of the Andes. And you and your peers will also engage in discussions with nonprofit organizations to deepen your understanding of Peru’s contemporary culture.
Adventure
No GLA program is complete without adventure! During your expedition in Peru, hike through the stunning Andes Mountains and the cloud forests of the Amazon to reach the iconic Machu Picchu. It’s a bucket list item that you won’t want to miss and one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Bike from the high Andes down into the Amazon cloud forest and then take to the water to experience a rafting excursion that will get your adrenaline pumping. Visit key archaeological sites of the Incan empire, including the imperial city of Cuzco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is known for its bustling plazas and cobblestone streets! Wander through colorful artisan markets and meet the makers who contribute to Peru’s living culture and artisanal heritage.
Lodging
Home Base is a locally-owned property in the Sacred Valley. Students stay in gender-segregated rooms and have access to shared bathrooms. During the program’s 3 night hiking excursion, students will stay at an ecolodge, in jungle domes and at a local hotel.
